McGehee Police Department and Jail, AR

The McGehee Police Department was established in 1891 by a people’s vote and is one of the oldest police departments in Arkansas. The police department has been located at its current site since 1915. The city also operates the McGehee Detention Center, which provides secure detention services to the residents of Franklin County.

Apart from serving as the primary law enforcement agency for the community, the Department’s officers get highly trained in K-9 training, crime prevention programs, drug interdiction, traffic patrol, and emergency medical services.

Department Structure

The Chief of police oversees the day-to-day operations of the department. They work with the members of the Department to ensure that each member receives adequate supervision and guidance. The Chief of Police is incharge of formulating policies and procedures regarding personnel issues, discipline, promotions, transfers, assignments, and benefits. The Chief of Police delegates authority to other supervisory officers.

The Lieutenant Commander supervises a shift of officers. Each shift consists of approximately ten officers. The Lieutenant Commander is responsible for ensuring that all work assigned during their shift gets adequately completed.

The duties include: assigning officers to specific beats, patrolling designated beats, conducting investigations, making arrests, issuing citations, processing arrest reports, handling prisoner transport and booking, directing traffic, maintaining records, and other activities required of the position.

A Sergeant is a supervisor who can assign tasks to other sergeants and lieutenants within the Department. Sergeants work on a team basis with their squad of officers and assist them in performing various functions. Their responsibilities include working directly with the officers under their command to achieve departmental goals.

They may be called upon to serve as acting commanders when necessary.

An Inspector/Investigator is an officer with specialized skills. An inspector investigates crimes committed in the city limits while an investigator investigates criminal activity occurring outside the city limits.

Both inspectors and investigators report to the Chief of Police. They conduct preliminary interviews of suspects, witnesses, and victims of crimes. They also prepare written statements about these events.

Civilian Staff

The McGehee Municipal Court Clerk assists the court system by providing information concerning the status of cases, scheduling hearings, recording all court judgments and sentences, and preparing proceedings’ transcripts.

The court clerk prepares and files pleadings and motions, maintains docket sheets and exhibits, and organizes the case file. The clerk does not perform any legal research or provide advice on proceeding in a given matter.

Procedures Followed by the Police Departments.

When individuals get arrested, they are taken to jail to be booked into prison. Upon entering the jail, the person will be searched to ensure no contraband enters the facility.

A photograph will be taken of the person, taking fingerprints. If the person has a prior record, this information will be entered into the computer system. Once the person’s information has been processed, it will be determined if space is available.

If there are no spaces available, the person will be held until a bed becomes available. If a person’s charges cannot be resolved at the time of booking, they will be released after being charged $20.00 per hour.

If a person is found innocent of the charge(s) brought against them, they will be issued a citation for which they will pay a fine of $75.00 plus court costs. If the person fails to pay their fines, the case will be referred to the municipal court.

If a person is found guilty of the charge(s), they will receive an official conviction. It is important to note that the person will have served only one day of jail time. However, many people are forced to wait several days before receiving a hearing date due to overcrowding.

At that point, a person may choose to either appeal the judge’s decision or accept the official conviction. If a person decides to appeal, the case will go back to the municipal court for another hearing. If a person agrees with the sentence, they must complete community service hours.

The hours vary depending on the offence committed and the number of times the person has been convicted.

After completing the required community service hours, the person will be eligible to apply for a job through the Employment Security Commission Office.
