Tennessee has a complex correctional system that includes state-run prisons, private prisons, and county jails. The goal of the system is to ensure public safety and provide rehabilitation and education to inmates.

The Tennessee Department of Correction (TDOC) is responsible for managing the state's prisons, probation and parole services, and community supervision programs. The TDOC operates 14 prisons across the state, with a total capacity of over 20,000 inmates.

In addition to state-run facilities, Tennessee also contracts with private prison companies to house inmates. The state also operates several community-based programs, such as work-release centers and community corrections programs, to help inmates transition back into society.

In Tennessee, you can search for an inmate using the TDOC's online inmate search tool. The search tool allows you to find inmates by name, TDOC number, or physical description. You can also search for inmates based on their current location, offense, or release date.

The search will provide an inmate's name, address, race, gender and offense. Additional information such as booking and release date, parole status or projected release date can also be provided in some cases.

Federal prisons can also be searched by inmate lookup services. Inmate records contain a variety of information including the location of the facility, family contact information, conviction and sentencing information, a mugshot and more.

In addition, VINELink is available for Tennessee inmates. VINE (Victim Information and Notification Everyday) provides victims of crime with the ability to locate an inmate’s whereabouts in real-time. It also offers notification when an inmate is removed from a facility or released.
